Ted Oberg

Investigative Reporter

202 993-2400

Since 1994 I've been a script-ripper, a one-man band, a military-beat reporter, and called a mo-fo by a sitting governor.    Nearly a decade ago I stepped off the general assignment track to look for investigative pieces in our city.  I turn 2-3 pieces every week as part of an incredible team.

I grew up within sight of the World Trade Center and was live from there the day they were attacked. I've worked across the country and reported around the world. In 2023, after more than 20 years in Houston, I joined the incredible I-Team at NBC Washington.

My beat is always evolving.  I have done political investigative work, crime, issue-oriented pieces, now I tend to look for government waste and fraud.

In 2016, I developed ABC13 Houston’s Turn to Ted consumer investigative series. Building on a strong tradition of consumer advocacy at the station, we troubleshoot consumer issues weekly.

Aside from telling me I am tall (the most frequent comment), many viewers tell me my pieces are easy to understand and get into hidden crevices in our community that could use a little light.

I am a FOIA addict.  I love digging into data.  I work with databases all the time, but love finding the people behind the numbers even more.  I'm trying to get better with social media every day and hope I am ahead of the curve.  But no matter how much technology changes, I am a firm believer that well told stories will succeed on any platform.  In an era in which focus is sometimes placed on process and tech, I love a good beginning, middle and end.

I grew up outside New York City, am a proud University of Michigan alum, an even prouder husband to a wonderful wife & daddy to three great girls.

I would love to talk to you more about what I do.
